Wolf-Born Race

The Wolf-Born are what we may call ‘shape-shifters’, or ‘werewolves’, although the latter term is slightly incorrect.
Wolf-Born are creatures with both human and wolf characteristics, and they may freely change between their wolf and human shapes; this is where the term 'werewolf' becomes incorrect, as the Wolf-Born are not forced to change during the full moon, nor do they fully lose control during their change.
Being creatures with both human and wolf characteristics, their behaviour is also different. Like real wolves (and sometimes humans), they tend to form a 'pack', in which one or two individuals are the leaders. The leaders, in wolf terminology, are called the 'Alphas'. The Alphas are backed up by their sidekicks, the so-called Bèta.
Then, there’s also the Omega, the lowest ranking Wolf-Born in the pack, whom is either too weak or too shy to rise through the ranks.

Physical traits
Physically, most Wolf-Born are in excellent shape, both in their wolf and human form. In combat situations, their wolf form is humongous, which sets them apart from real wolves. With this increase in size, there is also an increase in strength, speed, and appetite. It is likely that the Wolf-Born evolved their wolf form to become bigger and stronger in order to offset the danger they posed to their own kind, and to offset the danger that mankind posed to them.
The strong and durable Wolf-Born body possesses excellent healing qualities as well as an excellent immune system (this will be expanded on later..). Those two traits mix to create a virtually unlimited lifespan, although Wolf-Born can definitely die through injury, illness, starvation and the likes. Due to the differences in physiology, Wolf-Born have only rarely sought the advice of human doctors and healers, which is, indirectly, another cause of death.
Interestingly, Wolf-Born claws are longer and sharper than the claws of their wolf cousins.

As with many animal species, female Wolf-Born on average are smaller than their male counterparts, and there are anatomical variations between packs as well.

Diet
Being both wolf and man, Wolf-Born are omnivorous with a strong preference for meat. Most Wolf-Born in the Wolf-Born Land Astatica keep to a diet of meats and a certain amount of nuts and fruits to avoid overhunting.
Wolf-Born in the human world have adopted a more balanced diet similar to what the humans in their surroundings would eat, although even they will have a strong preference for meat.

Reproduction
Unlike real wolves, and much like humans, Wolf-Born who are not of alpha rank may choose a mate (wife or husband, significant other, pick a word).
Like humans, they take a long time to mature, although even at a young age, the Wolf-Born are noticeably more powerful than human children.
Wolf-Born are capable of carrying young at the age of 16, although many choose to wait. They produce one, maybe two young at a time, and with a lot of difficulties.

Venom / Virus
Like werewolves, it is possible for a Wolf-Born to pass on their unusual trait to a human. This happens through a bite, in which ‘venom’ is delivered to the human.
Most often however, the human will not survive.
The 'venom' contains a combination of hormones and proteins, an antibacterial agent, and virus particles.
It is the virus which changes humans into one of the Wolf-Born, and it is also the virus which allows for the changes of the Wolf-Born to keep happening.
The combination of hormones and proteins allows for rapid spreading of the virus particles, as well as the temporary suppression of the immune system to allow the virus to do its job.
Once inside the human body, the virus infects all the human cells, not distinguishing between any of the cells available. There, it fits its own DNA into the host cell’s DNA and replicates itself, making every human cell a Wolf-Born cell.
The viral DNA, or Wolf-Born DNA, is important for the wolf part of the individual, the change, the healing rate, as well as their strengthened immune system.
The strengthened immune system is necessary to prevent future infections with another Wolf-Born’s venom, although it does not decrease the pain which accompanies the bite.
It also functions to prevent future infections with other viruses which are capable of inserting their DNA into the host DNA, to prevent potentially fatal mutations from occurring.
A downside to their strengthened immune systems is that Wolf-Born are more prone to having autoimmune diseases and miscarriages.

Behaviour
Wolf-Born behaviour is a mix of human and wolf behaviour. As a human, they show more animal-like tendencies, such as being more prone to intimidate those lower in rank than they are.
Even in their human form, they are more likely to use more physical force than regular humans, and they might snarl or otherwise show wolfish behaviour. For this reason, most Wolf-Born try to keep away from humans, to avoid detection.
The change can be triggered by strong emotions such as anger, and for this reason, many Wolf-Born try to avoid such situations when in the presence of humans.
In their wolf form, the Wolf-Born are even more prone to using violence, seeing as they evolved to fight for survival. They will also kill enemies without regret, although many Wolf-Born allow the enemy to give up the fight and submit to them in order to prevent unnecessary deaths from happening.

Wolf-Born behaviour amongst themselves is highly subject to the character of the individual and of their pack. Some Wolf-Born are exceptionally hostile to others, whereas others are the complete opposites.
The need for a pack to have their own territory however, is one thing that remains steadfast. Most Wolf-Born packs also try to keep rivaling packs and lone wolves away from their grounds.

Wolf-Born are generally very friendly to animals of other species whenever they are not actively hunting them. Some Wolf-Born, especially those who have lived among humans, may have taken to keeping pets of all species, proving that Wolf-Born can control their hunting urges.

Wolf-Born are generally wary of humans, recognizing that the human race is both numerable, creative and strong, in their own ways. A Wolf-Born’s relationship with the human race is highly subject to the individual’s character, as well as their pack. Some Wolf-Born are very fond of the human race, whereas others despise humans.
